“The war in Iraq is inflicting a much greater emotional toll on U.S. troops than most Americans realize.”

That’s how the article “Death of a Marine” is introduced. The article then goes on to give the sad story of how one marine was driven to suicide by his wartime experience.

What? Where does this have anything to do with the general state of being of the entire US Military? One soldier? I’d venture to guess that you could pick any war (or probably any peacetime) in history and find examples of soldiers who committed suicide due to their tough military experiences.

New York Times columnist Bob Herbert should embarrassed by his transparent attempt at exploiting the emotional story of the death of this soldier to push his anti-Iraq-war agenda.

  1. 1 Aldous

    Indeed.

…because Walter Reed is just an isolated event.

…because reports of Iraq Vets ALREADY homeless are all exagerrated.

…because the fact that the Veteran’s Administration Boss was a GOP Contributor whose previous work was in Real Estate SURELY would not damage the VA’s job.

…because all those Generals testifying in Congress on Army and Reserve Effectiveness (or lack thereof) were lying.

…because the Troops now have adequate body armor after YEARS of complaints (oh wait, they DON’T).

…because the 8 BILLION DOLLARS in US Taxpayer Money that disappeared just wasn’t that much when you think about it.

…because Halliburton deserves the money it gets for giving spoiled food to troops.

  2. I’m not arguing for or against his point here–my point is that the article was poorly written and nothing but an emotional manipulation. Maybe if he had brought up some of the issues you list here there would have been some substance or something to consider.
